    Sarita Handa 25 years & Beyond- A 2 day Exhibition of Historical Textiles and Contemporary art by Sarita Handa at Bikaner House A 2 day exhibition of historical textiles and contemporary art by Sarita Handa at Bikaner House, New Delhi from 28th – 29th October 2017 Working towards design innovation and inspired by Indian heritage and craft, Sarita Handa for the past 25 years has taken Indian aesthetics to a global platform representing traditional skills with contemporary accents. In more than 2 decades the company has been responsible in bringing back to life the old school art of Indian needlework translated into beautiful craft intensive collections with global inspirations. Established in 1992 the company commemorates the 25 years in design and to mark this celebration a 2 day exhibition of art and textile is being organised at the legendary Bikaner House, New Delhi from 28th- 29th October 2017. The exhibition will showcase the company’s collection of rare and vintage textiles handpicked over the years from across the globe and contemporary creative projects by 5 visionary artists Satish Gupta, Gunjan Arora and Rahul Jain, Arrti Mansinghka, Tanuj Ahuja and Jeevan Xavier interpreted in various mediums like video, weaving and canvas in their own individual style using signature Sarita Handa textiles. The collaborations for this event take the sustainability drive forward by cherishing and re-purposing fabrics from the company’s archives giving them a new life. Represented through the use of techniques such as patchwork, thread art et al, the artworks have upcycled and repurposed signature Sarita Handa scraps upholding our initiative for conscious creation.The artists themselves share a special relationship with Sarita Handa which has evolved over the years, making this occasion into a celebration of the creative conversations they have developed with the organisation. The event reflects an interest in providing a unique platform for artistic expression in textiles and the development of an on-going programme to support emerging talent in the field. It represents a new series of initiatives that celebrate collaborations between art and textiles to bring forth ‘the art of textiles’. Satish Gupta, a renowned Indian artist and sculptor, draws upon his constant engagement with the art of zen and mysticism to create dynamic installations which are inspired by Buddhism. The designer duo of Gunjan Arora and Rahul Jain will transform a method of using yarn in textile art unique to them with the use of mudras or hand-gestures associated with Indian spirituality. Mumbai-based artist Arrti Mansinghka will evoke facets of the holy river Ganga recreating its journey through sacred geographies using intricate textile patchwork and Bangalore-based designer Jeevan Xavier will shed light upon the essential skills of the hand which go into making every Sarita Handa product, through a film-based series of projections. Tanuj Ahuja brings forth his understanding and bond with the company and Mrs Handa in two surreal artworks - Continunace and The Cow - A Giver, touching upon the company's ideologies of nourishing and giving back to the society. A kaleidoscope of renewal, rebirth, reinvention and regeneration of design, textile and art, the event celebrates the past and toasts new beginnings.     To Mark World Sustainability Day, Delhi Teens Drive #breathe delhi: A Clean Air Campaign New Delhi, 25 October 2017: To address the alarming air pollution in the national capital, city teens have rolled out the second phase of ‘#breathe delhi’ - a clean air campaign in New Delhi on the occasion of World Sustainability Day. This campaign is a brainchild of Aadyaa Singhania, a 17 year young passionate student who is an environmentalist in spirit. Students of various schools along with Aadyaa and her friends started this campaign on 24th October 2017 at four major red-lights- Moti Bagh Crossing, Chirag Dilli Crossing, Moolchand Crossing and ITO Crossing New Delhi. Delhi has over 10 million registered vehicles. Many commuters at red-lights keep engine running and an idling engine can produce up to twice as much exhaust emission as an engine in motion. Exhaust emission contains toxic air such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate pollutants. The young enthusiasts requested the commuters to switch off the engines at the red lights which are longer than 15 seconds. They also distributed the informative literature and anti pollution masks while spreading information on basic steps which we generally overlook but can play a vital role to combat growing level of air pollution. Speaking about the Clean Air Campaign #breathe delhi that Aadyaa is currently driving in the city, she said “Our national capital is among the top air-polluted cities across the globe and in a recent report by WHO, Delhi is ranked 11th among 3, 000 cities in 103 countries in terms of PM2.5 (fine, particulate pollution) and 25th in terms of PM10 (coarse pollution particles) levels. To combat the alarming level of pollution in the city we became active on ground. I reached out to a number of schools to enlist volunteers amongst children like me who can influence their parents and others in a positive manner. After all it is our future that we are trying to protect.” Giving her perspective she added “Everybody in India feels that somebody else should take care of pollution problem and very easily passes on the blame to the government. It is certainly the responsibility of every individual towards the environment. We are the ones that are contributing to deteriorating of the environment. While we have been progressing as a human race, we have been doing it at the cost of the environment. It is time that we payback our longstanding debt to the environment. We can start by keeping the environment green by planting trees and bio composting, by watching ourselves and making sure we don’t contribute negatively to the air quality such as by being more mindful in the choices we make in our day to day life for example- switching to better quality fuel, reducing DG sets, making sure our cars meet the emission norms etc.” The 12 days long first phase of the campaign was organized at Moti Bagh and ITO crossings around Earth day in April this year. During the first phase, Aadyaa also organised awareness sessions on environment conservation and sustainability at Sadhu Vaswani School, Blue Bells International & Mount Carmel in the city. Recently, Aadyaa planted over a 100 saplings at the SDMC Primary Co-ED School RK Puram, Delhi as a futuristic step to improve the air quality. She has also started a waste paper recycling initiative in association with Green O Tech, a wastepaper recycler, in which waste papers are being collected from corporates and recycled into eco-friendly notebooks. These notebooks are being distributed free of cost to underprivileged students. Inflicted by asthma attacks in her childhood days, Aadyaa, from her early days, felt very strongly for the need of clean air quality which was a prime reason for suffering of many kids like hers. She became a passionate environmentalist and because of her concern for the environment and desire to make a difference, she pursued a certificate course in “Introduction to Environmental Sciences” from Darthmothx. Her stints in the field of environment conservation include her association with TERI, her work with Professor Rajam, Delhi University, to find a bacteria that consumes lead, a constituent of air pollution in Delhi as well as algae that is more efficient in conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen and her work with Ricardo India Pvt. Ltd., a Renewable Energy & Environment Expert amongst many others. After completing initial schooling from Vasant Valley School, Aadya went to pursue higher grades at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, UK, in 2014. Her trips to Delhi in the past few years highlighted the stark contrast in the environmental conditions, especially Air pollution in London and Delhi. Moved to make a change, Aadyaa first studied the similarities and the evolution of both the cities and has now taken upon herself to create awareness as well initiate doable projects. In her attempt to make a difference at the policy level, she has researched and written a paper on the inclusion of Pollution as a subject in the curriculum. She has also tried to highlight how pollution is taught to the school children in the US and UK under the Fulbright Scholarship Institute vis-a-vis NCERT. She is determined to pursue her interest and continues to contribute in raising awareness amongst the youth and finding big and small solutions for improving air quality in our city and securing a healthy future for our generations to come. Aadyaa has been associated with the NGO, “Care for Air” to monitor Air pollution during the pre and post odd-even scheme run in Delhi.     Best Book Market In Delhi First-Hand Experience: Sunday Book Market at Daryaganj Everyone who comes to Delhi has probably heard of it. If you haven't then now you will. It is the place to go if you're looking to buy books for a fraction of their price. Whether they're books for your college syllabus, preparation material for the civil exams, coffee table books, old copies of magazines, novels for leisure reading or even note books to doodle in, it's all available here. You get novels here starting from Rs.10 onwards. Yes, Rs.10. That's the average price of a cup of tea from your local chai guy. This Sunday special book market opens once a week at the pavements of Asaf Ali Road in Chandini Chowk. They open shop around 10 am till sun down. It was fairly easy to locate in the past but now it's even easier. The newly established Delhi Gate Metro Station has an Exit (no.4) that is situated just in the middle of this pop-up book market. So if you go via metro, you'll have no issue locating this place. Ideally, it's best to go as early as possible so as to get a first look at what's available. I wasn't the first visitor this past Sunday, but I did manage to get there before 11 am. The sun was already shining like there was no tomorrow and I was glad that I had brains enough to at least wear my cap. With the Sun on my back, I began scouring the river of books that lay ahead of me on the pavement that served as its path. Hot. It was hot. I wasn't hoping for it to rain, as that would probably cause the book sellers to close shop to protect their wares but I was hoping for some clouds to give us shade from the glare of the Sun. With droplets of sweat forming at my brows and my tee getting sticky underneath my backpack, I slowly browsed the thousands of books, column by column, in the hunt for a few that would join the ranks of my slowly growing band of novels back home. After an hour or so of book hunting, I had managed to find ten novels worthy of joining my amateur collection. Halo: The Fall Of Reach (it's based on a popular video game), The Hobbit (J.R.R.Tokien, 1983 Paperback), The Hobbit (J.R.R.Tokien, 1987 Paperback), The Fellowship Of The Ring (J.R.R.Tokien, Book 1 of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, 1983 Paperback), The Two Towers (J.R.R.Tokien, Book 2 of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, year not mentioned, possibly 1980s as well, Paperback), The Silmarillion (J.R.R.Tokien, 1992 Paperback), The Colour Of Magic (Terry Pratchett, 1989 Paperback), Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton, 1989 Paperback), The Unwaba Revelations (Sumit Basu, Part 3 of the Game World Trilogy) and lastly, my favourite find, Seven Years In Tibet (Heinrich Harrer, 1970 Paperback). Most of you would be confused as to why I have purchased two copies of the same book (The Hobbit). Honestly, I've read most of these books in the past but I have a thing for old prints. Maybe it's because of the fact that they were printed in another world, one without the internet or a time when reading was more appreciated. Also, the Tolkien books of old had better covers with original art, which is lacking in the newer prints. As a bonus this copy of the Silmarillion was a centenary edition hence the special cover. As for the Terry Pratchett, the man is a genius in writing funny. If you haven't read any of his works yet, then I strongly suggest you get into it immediately. Just as Tolkien created the world of Middle Earth where most of his stories take place, Pratchett has created the Discworld (as the name suggests, it's a flat world, just like a disc), where most of his characters go about their ridiculous adventures. Talking about fictional worlds, in the list of purchases is one of Delhi's very own, Sumit Basu. Seems to me that Sumit has taken inspiration from the works of Tolkien in creating his own world where the Gameworld Trilogy occurs. A must read if you're into the fantasy genre. He includes everything from trolls and dwarves to pani puris and rakshasas. Halo is a Microsoft exclusive game series that have set records and even has a sort of a cult following (members of Halo fan clubs often refer to themselves as Halo Nation). This series has sold over 65 million copies of their games worldwide, grossing about 3.4 billion dollars. Because of its popularity, it eventually branched into other media such as books, like the one I purchased. They've even made animated movies based on the same. Jurrasic Park is a modern era sci-fi classic, that created waves in Hollywood when they used freakishly realistic robotics in the making of the blockbuster movie. This is one of Micheal Crichton's best works and it deserves to be in every fantasy/sci-fi lovers collection. Seven Years In Tibet is one of the greatest travel stories ever told. Heinrich Harrer, a German prisoner of war (during World War II) of the British in India, escapes to Tibet. In this book are the details of his stay in Tibet, in simple clear language, that is direct and humane. I haven't read the book yet, having only read a few reviews and having seen the 1997 version of the movie (Brad Pitt plays the role of Heinrich), I have merely a rough grasp of the story. During his stay in Tibet, Heinrich Harrer manages to win the hearts of the locals and also ends up befriending His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama, all this amidst the impending invasion of the Chinese. 10 books. Rs.440. Yes, 440. Most of the books were purchased for Rs.50 while two were bought for Rs.20 each! With finds like these, I guess I'll be going there at least once a month or more often, in a hunt for literary jewels that are yet to be recognised. Also, buying copies of books I've already read may sound like a waste, but it makes for great gifting options, knowing full well that the book I'm gifting is worth reading!     Miniso Opens For Business In Delhi NCR Miniso was often mistaken as a Japanese brand because of the logo which is written in Japanese scriptures, "メイソウ". However, they also use "Miniso" as their alternate logo.
